A ROYAL WEDDING PARTY

Well, it has been a long time coming, but Wills and Kate are finally tying the knot in what is sure to be an elaborate ceremony on April 29. A good friend of mine is hosting a Royal Wedding Party, which I think is a fabulous idea.

For those of you hosting (or thinking about hosting) your own Royal Wedding Party here are some of my tips and suggestions...

For those of you not already aware, Kate's mum owns her own very successful party supply business in the UK - see partypieces.co.uk. So what could be a better talking point for your party than ordering your party supplies from the bride's mum!

Party Pieces also happens to stock my favourite party setting for a Royal Wedding Party - the British Street Party set, some of which is pictured below. How cute are the napkins! The same range is available at quite a few different online stores, and if you have left your run too late to get it shipped from the UK, Lark Handmade stock it here in Australia.

Google "britannia" and you will find lots of Union Jack themed party gear, like these retro party poppers.

Meri Meri make these very cute cupcake liner and topper packs - available via lots of online stores.

I am generally pretty anti-tacky party supplies, but I spotted this lifesize cutout - which is clearly a must have at any royal wedding party, although I'm certain shipping would cost more than the cutout itself!

As for food, think anything with Her Majesties royal endorsement...

For something more substantial try Scotch Eggs, cornish pasties, homemade pies, sausages, sausages...or sausages1 If you go with meat cooked in the least appetising way imaginable you are probably on the right track!

For sweets, there are actually lots of traditional English sweets that I love. In particular, trifle is easy to mke and (almost) always a crowd pleaser. Or a simple sponge cake is lovely for a daytime affair.

If you have some Wedgewood pieces stored away, now is the time to set them free. See also these gorgeous Wedgewood inspired cookiees and cakes.

Serve up refreshing pimms and lemonade/ginger beer with slices of lemon cucumber strwberries etc and Bollinger champagne (if you have a royal sized budget).

Round the meal off with the Twinings tea of your choice.

Finally, if your husband is planning to stick around for the event, you will probably need a supply of these...

I LOVE PAPER

I thought I'd share two of my favourite Australian paper shops today, both with excellent online shopfronts.

The first is Papermarc.com.au based in Victoria. I just love browsing their range and they create some really beautiful and affordable wedding invitations. This one is my very favourite.

I wish they had been around for my wedding....

The other one I love is Amazing Paper in Enmore here in Sydney. They are great on service and also have a wonderful range. I bought some of these gorgeous envelopes the other day. I have no idea what to do with them, but they were just too pretty to not buy!

They also do wedding and event stationary.

Gee, do I have an obsession with brown kraft paper?

I have stumbled accross the most amazing sweet shop on Etsy...Andie's Specialty Sweets Andie creates the most incredible sugar decorations I think i have ever seen.

Unfortunately, for my Australian readers, I don't think Andie ships her delights to our shores, so we will have to admire her work from afar!

Stumbled across this lovely "bar of honeybread" at my local grocer. It is made by Jepska Enterprises based in the north of Sydney, and i think it would make a fantastic take home party treat. In fact, it looks like Jepska do custom orders, including for wedding favours etc. We went to a wedding just a few weeks ago where the placecards/favours were gingerbread men - see below, as modelled by friends Trev and Charlie - tres cute.

You may have seen these before, but they were new to me...

I spotted these mini waffle cones at my local grocer - ideal for kids summer parties!

I have seen pre-made baby gelatos before but I think these are great because you can use them in mini ice-cream stand. Use teaspoons as scoops, let the kids select their flavour of ice-cream (or just stick with vanilla, which everyone likes) and then set up a range of toppings for them to decorate with.

So, it was my sister's wedding on the weekend. It was a very beautiful affair - see a few pictures of the heavily preganant bridesmaid (aka me) below. Angus (my son) clearly had trouble recognising me with hair and make-up done...

Also, here are few pics of the desert table that I assisted with.... I found the sweet heart stamp on Etsy.

PARTY COMPETITION

I am sorry for the delay posting some of the entries in our party competition. We had my sister's weddding on the weekend and it was a big and beautiful event (pics to follow soon), so I am just catching up on lots of orders and other bits and pieces, like updating my oft-neglected blog.

Indigo's "Flying High" Welcome Party

Here are just a couple of beautiful photos of the sky inspired party thrown by mum Renee for her little boy Indigo to welcome him to the world.

Such a fresh and lovely theme - and fantastic for boys with all the shades of blue to play with.

I immediately fell in love with the lettered biscuits and the beautifully detailed favour bags.

Emma's Eco Fairy 6th Birthday Party

Again, just a couple of the gorgeous photos submitted by lovely mum Joanne.

I chose these two because I think the favour bags are just so pretty, and the room set up is just so welcoming for budding little fairies (love the mini-sized chairs and tables, which I know you can hire out).

Ruby's 3rd Birthday Circus Party

I am a such sucker for a Circus party - of all the party themes out there, this is my absolute No.1. I chose these two pictures because (a) I think the party girl looks adorable in the photo above left, (b) our fabulous Retro Wagon Popcorn bags are featured, (c) I think the cupcakes with personalised toppers look amazing (those moulds are perfect) and (d) I think the parachute is an absolute winner.

Hugo's Woodland 1st Birthday Party

Here are a few pics from an incredibly impressive party for Hugo hosted by mum Belinda. I love the red, white and blue theming. The little birds nests and marshmallow "toadstools" are totally irresistable, and I love the gift-wrapped sultanas displayed in the retro suitcase (a very clever way to blend in things that otherwise don't quite "fit" on the table).

Baby Shower by Vicki

I just love this table set up with the little blocks, the big beautiful bunch of daisies (so so perfect for a baby shower I think) and I absolutely love the idea of floating a single rubber duck in a large vase - so striking.

The quality is so unbelievably high, I have no idea how I am going to pick a winner!

We held a baby shower for our lovely friend Ellen on the weekend.

Her husband is Welsh and she has already picked out a Welsh name for her little boy, so we went with a red, white and green theme.

LITTLE RED HEN

On the weekend, we celebrated my younger sister's Hens Day (Bridal Shower). It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and the champagne was flowing.

For at least the first part of the day, we stuck with the "Little Red Hen" theme (based on the old children's story of the same name), which turned out really well.

JASPER'S VINTAGE WONDERLAND PARTY

I was very honoured to assist with Jasper's first Birthday party. However, the trick was to create a 1st Birthday party that could morph into Grandpa's 70th Birthday party later in the evening.

His mum had a Wonderland party in mind, and we decided to seek inspiration from the world of vintage oddities and curiosities. A great theme for boys, young and old.

I have attached my inspiration board below...

I really apologise for not properly crediting all the photos, but I have lost my list of sources. If your pic is on the board, and you would like me to add a credit, please acccept my apologies and send me an email to let me know.

I sourced these great posters via Zazzle.com.

I bought lots of old-fashioned apothecary bottles and custom made "Eat Me" and "Drink Me" tags to hang around the bottle necks.

We ordered some extra large round red balloons to decorate the rooms.

I made some favour bags with custom "Take me" tags - they were super cute - I wish I had a better picture.

Navy blue, red, brown, black and ivory lanterns and fans were strung up around the room.

Red, blue and white jelly beans to fill the jars came from goodygoodygumdrops.com.au, as did the giant red jaffas.

Vases for "grown up lollies" were filled with clear-wrapped nougat, Italian almond biscuits and Whittakers chocolate bars.

For little ones, there were soft chicos and gold coins.

I found an old globe to use as the table centrepiece.

All finished off with a custom made I LOVE PARTIES Happy Birthday banner!

ZARA'S SUPER SWEET STRAWBERRY PARTY

My little strawberry friend Zara had her 1st Birthday not long ago and we celebrated with a very cute party thrown by her lovely mum, Celie.

There were strawerries and cream, jaffas, strawberry topped cupcakes, a super strawberry cake, cute kraft favour bags and bottles of bubbles decorated with scratch'n'sniff stickers.

OUR RETRO SURF PARTY

A week or so ago we held our much anticipated I LOVE PARTIES RETRO SURF 2ND BIRTHDAY PARTY, and I am pleased to say it was a very big success! Beautiful weather and lots of fun.

Cookies and cupcakes are by Libby at Polkadot Cookies (Polka.com.au) - she is AMAZING!

So settle in, this is a long post....

FAVOUR AND CAKE TABLE

The idea was that everyone filled their own gift bag. I laid out some cool black shades, custom colouring books (available from the I LOVE PARTIES shop) and crayons, surf tattoos (available in the shop shortly), "Surf Screen" (which we created custom labels for) and personalised surf wax from customsurfwax.com.au. Then I added some hibiscus lollypops, pineapples jellies, bananas, and Bounties. The tin pails are also available from the I LOVE PARTIES shop.

These are I LOVE PARTIES favor (lolly) bags. The vases are filled with blue jelly beans topped with white milk bottles. The large leaves are from a discount store.

I framed some photoshopped pictures of the Birthday boy (on old surf magazine covers) alongside his surf trophies. The cake is a banana cake and is homemade with an edible decoration purchased from http://www.cakesaroundtown.com.au/.

PARTY FOOD TABLE

The cupcakes and cookies were just fabulous. Libby made us some shark cupcakes and "sand" cupcakes which I decorated with some handmade "No Surfcraft" signs and blue flags. The surfboard and wave cookies were perfect.

I used the surfboard cookie cutter to cut sandwiches which we decorated with some homemade flags. The plates, cups and napkins are available in the shop.

Jelly oranges and fruit skewers

Mini hamburgers, chicken and pineapple skewers, potato salad and mini hot dogs.

THE SUNSET BAR

I had set out jugs of lime cordial (Green Room Juice), pineapple juice (Mellow Yellow), orange juice (Sunny Delight) and blue powerade (Blue Hawaii). The hula girl straws were a big hit and are available in the shop.

GENERAL DECORATIONS

Big fan of the giant balloons.

Some custom surf shack signs made out of fence pailing and paint.

I was so in love with these pineapples - they were huge and looked fantastic.

THE BIRTHDAY BOY AND HIS (CRAZY) GRANNY

GAMES

FISH OUT OF WATER

Cut out fish using different coloured cardboard and attach a large paper clip. Buy a magnet from your local hardware store and attach it with string to a broom handle or similar and away you go.

COCONUT BOWLING

This was VERY cute. I bought two real coconuts and made some "palm tree" pins with coloured card attached to juice bottles. I recommend playing this one on the grass because the coconut do crack.

Another great theme for a little boys birthday (or girls)!

- Buy some cheap white or grey beanies for each little guest and hand them out as they arrive.

- Decorate the tables with red gingham or checked tablecoths and deocrate the tables with some pudding wrapped in canvas (should be readily available for parties around Christmas time) and wildflowers.

- Feed your guests traditional Australian party fare like sausage rolls and party pies, fairy bread and chocolate crackles. Serve in big white bowls.

- For the cake...magic pudding of course! Try cooking a caked in a pudding shaped mould and then place the pudding inside a "smash cake" (decorated chocolate shell for the birthday boy or girl to break with a hammer).

- Opt for old-fashioned boys games and activites. Again, I highly recommend The Dangerous Book for Boys to you. It is full of instructions for lots of activities boys will LOVE - like making a bow and arrow(?), making paper planes, tying knots, catching insects, etc. You can also try traditional party games, like sack races (sacks available from I LOVE PARTIES) and egg and spoon races.

- Send guests away with brown kraft paper favour bags fill with all the cooking supplies they will need to make their own (chocolate) pudding at home, including a recipe, a little wooden spoon, whisk, etc!

- Opt for other old-fashioned boys games and activites. I highly recommend The Dangerous Book for Boys to you. Following on from yesterday's post, here are some hints and tips for a gorgeous Blinky Bill party.

I think this theme would make for a lovley first birthday party, particularly (but not exclusively) for a boy.

- Ask guests to dress up as Blinky or Nutsy. Dress the Birthday boy or girl up in some cute red overalls and some koala ears.

- Decorate the tables with red gingham or checked tablecoths, Australian wild flowers and gumnuts.

- Hit cheap souvenier shops for some cheap koala paraphenalia, including little koalas to give away as party favours, or to use in a "Blinky Hunt".

- Make a banner of gum leaves strung with twine. Alternatively, you can download "printable" gumleaves from http://www.treeproject.abavic.org.au/pdf-articles/Australian-Gumleaves.pdf

- Use eco friendly plates, cups (we stock these in the I LOVE PARTIES shop) and wooden cutlery.

- Serve up some koala cupcakes (see these gorgeous cakes for inspiration) and some Tiny Teddies (you can also find some cute Koala biscuits at your local Asian grocer).

In honour of our nation's birthday, over the coming few days, I've decided to look at a few Australian childrens' literary classics (Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, Ginger Meggs, Blinky Bill and the Magic Pudding) in the hope of inspiring you all to throw a similarly themed parties.

I found very little inspiration for these themed parties online which means that (a) not nearly enough people are being inspired by these gorgeous old books, and/or (b) people are shy about sharing their ideas online. If you fall into the latter category PLEASE send me your photos and ideas - I'd love to see what you have done.

First, up....SNUGGLEPOT AND CUDDLEPIE. My favourite childrens' books of all time, penned and illustrated by the wonderful May Gibbs.

This theme would make for a magical first birthday or baby shower...

- Ask guests to dress up as their favourite characters from the books (boys will no doubt enjoy dressing up as the evil Banksia men!). Alternatively, make each of your guests a skirt from gum leaves threaded on twine and make or buy some simply green or brown beanies as party favours.

- Decorate the tables with Australian wild flowers and gumnuts. Use vintage table cloths or cloths with a wildflower print.

- Buy party invitations from the Nutcote shop, http://www.maygibbs.com.au/. If you live in Sydney, you can even hold the party at Nutcote (May Gibbs' old home, and where she wrote the books).

- Make a banner of gum leaves strung with twine.

Alternatively, you can download "printable" gumleaves, such as the images above, from http://www.treeproject.abavic.org.au/pdf-articles/Australian-Gumleaves.pdf

- Use eco friendly plates, cups (we stock these in the I LOVE PARTIES shop) and wooden cutlery.

- Serve up some cupcakes decorated with wild flowers and/or berries.

- Have jugs or bottles with labels: "Wattle Nectar", "Blossom Juice" and "Gumnut Soda".

- This is an ideal party to hold a little treasure hunt in the garden. Make a little map and hide some little creatures for them to find along the way. Go for other old-fashioned games, like sack races (sacks available from I LOVE PARTIES) and egg and spoon races.

- Send guests away with some wooden pencils or crayons, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie stickers and a pressed leaf bookmark (or use the printable download above) all in a brown kraft paper bag (available from I LOVE PARTIES).

- Alternatively, send your guests away with their own native seedling.

These little guys are full of racing car jellies and can be found at Big W for a very reasonable price. I love them so much I'm going to look into stocking them in the new year!

We're going to be away from home this Christmas, and our little man is still a bit too young for a decorated tree (unless you add the words "to destroy"), but I love love love Christmas so I have scattered a few decorations around the living room to liven up the place. My little vintage soldiers and these fuzzy little reindeer are this year's favourites!

I also made a few little lolly bags for darling husband to hand out to the kids that he teaches (teenage boys, so sure to be totally unappreciated!).

Today we feature an AMAZING Lego birthday party. These pics have been sent to us by Carol, mum of Lego-mad Addison (6).

The details of this party are simply INCREDIBLE...read on and enjoy!

The invitations featured a photo collage of him with his latest creation; the Lego Police Station.

When each child RSVP'd I asked the parents for a recent photo of their child. I used these photos to create a Lego, photo caricature of each child. The girls had pink shirts and hats while the boys had red and blue. These little Lego people then featured on their party favours, along with selected Lego characters and their names printed using a Lego style font. Rather than just using bags with lollies, I made ceramic mugs for each child. Inside each mug was a fridge magnet with their Lego person photo and a few yummy treats.

I had fun with the cake, although it did take ages to make. The kids all had coloured tongues after eating this creation!

We mostly played traditional party games including sack races, pass the parcel, water balloon basketball, limbo, etc.

I also made a Lego brick piniata with my son out of papier mache.

Today, I want to feature some very cute party pics sent in by mum, Amanda.

These party pics are particularly special becuase the party girl was/is lactose intolerant, but her very special mum worked some magic in the kitchen to ensure she still had an amazing birthday party...

Here are some ideas and tips to take away from her big day:

* Meringues are easy to do and completely dairy free so perfect party food.

* Most people put lollies into loot bags and with that not really being an option as most contain dairy I had pencil rolls instead which was a really big hit amongst the kids and had many mums and dads thanking me for not giving their kids sugar to take home.

* Royal icing fondant is dairy free so I rolled that flat and used a heart cookie cutter to cut out hearts and then pasted half a heart at a time onto the cake with jam

* Donuts usually contain dairy and are usually fried too, so I decided to bake donuts and ice them instead so much healthier and easily made dairy free.

Another year, another glorious Melbourne Cup Day, another series of failed bets.

So, I know Halloween is not such a big deal in Oz. But seeing all the super cute craft and decorating ideas coming out of the States at this time of year, it really makes me wish we did.
